Descripción

Robert Mapplethorpe was one of the most prominent photographers of his generation and undoubtedly the most controversial. After experimenting with collages and sculpture in the early 1970s, he revolutionized the New York art world in 1977 with two exhibitions: one of portraits, still lifes, and flowers, and another of male nudes and homoerotic photos. Both aspects of his work broke new ground, and his technical mastery and impeccable aesthetic approach allowed him to move from being an “enfant terrible” to an international grand master of photography.

The book also covers the first exhibition solely dedicated to Mapplethorpe’s portraits, held at the National Portrait Gallery in 1988. Along with iconic images from his career, such as portraits of William Burroughs, Patti Smith, Lisa Lyon, and Caroline Herrera, the book features a large number of previously unpublished portraits, including some of his British sitters, such as Lord Snowdon, Jasper Conran, and Peter Gabriel.
